How are top pins calculated for Schlage conventional or FSIC cylinders?

Resolution
In Schlage conventional cylinders as well as Schlage full size interchangeable cores (FSIC), top pins are utilized in between the springs and the rest of the pin stack (bottom pins and master pins). The top pins are available in three different sizes - here are the guidelines for optimal top pin usage:
-
If total pin stack is 0, 1, 2, or 3, a #1 top pin is utilized
-
If total pin stack is 4, 5, or 6, a #2 top pin is utilized
-
If total pin stack is 7, 8, or 9, a #3 top pin is utilized.
