We suggest using basic Duracell batteries instead of Duracell Optimum batteries with Schlage locks.
Testing indicates that the Duracell Optimum cell maintains a slightly higher voltage throughout its life, but has a much sharper falloff at the end of life than the standard alkaline cell. Overall, the Optimum displayed a lower capacity than the OEM cells, on the order of 10% less.
Even though the manufacturer’s data sheets for these cells indicate that the OEM has a lower internal resistance than the Optimum, testing shows the opposite to be true. This may be explained by the age of the cells used in the test, but for the Optimum neither the cell nor the packaging give any indication of the manufacture date. In any case, at the end of life the Optimum exhibited less rise in internal resistance than either of the two OEM cells.
