Couple things to check:
Make sure both the receiver and transmitter are the same frequency. (433 mhz, 900 mhz)
Check to see that there is a clear line of site between transmitter and receiver antenna, because multiple factors will affect the operational range.
Make sure the receiver is properly wired to a power source and the the transmitter has good batteries.
