Why Is the Auto-Lock Feature Not Working on My Schlage Encode Lock?

The Schlage Encode series (BE489, BE499, and FE789) includes the Auto-Lock feature which enhances security. However, these features may occasionally stop working due to app settings, updates, or other factors. Below is a guide to troubleshoot and resolve issues with these features.

Why Auto-Lock Might Stop Working:

  1. Auto-lock is disabled in the Schlage Home app

  2. The lock is not paired to the Schlage Home app

  3. Recent app updates or reinstallations may reset the feature

How to Verify and Enable Auto-Lock Settings:

To activate the Auto-Lock feature on the Schlage Encode and Encode Plus, the lock must be paired with the Schlage Home app. For the Encode Lever, the app is required to adjust the auto-lock timer.

  • Open the Schlage Home app.

  • Navigate to your lock and select it.

  • Tap the three dots next to the lock name.

  • Locate the Auto-Lock Delay option in the settings menu.

  • Select Lock Settings.

  • If auto-lock is enabled, the selected time frame will be displayed.

  • If auto-lock is turned off, it will display "Off."

  • You can reactivate or adjust the auto-lock delay timer here.

Manual Activation for the Schlage Encode Lever

  •

    • If the lock is not paired with the Schlage Home app, press the lock button on the interior side of the lock to ensure auto-lock is activated.

    • Note that pressing the unlock button will disable auto-lock functionality.

Additional Troubleshooting Steps:

If the Encode Lever does not auto-lock after the programmed time frame, attempt a soft reset of the lock.

Perform a Soft Reset:

  1. Retract the Bolt.

  2. Remove the Battery Cover.

  3. Remove the Battery Tray.

  4. Keep the battery tray removed for 10 seconds.

  5. Reinsert the battery tray back into the compartment, ensuring it is securely seated and connected.

  6. Extend the bolt to the "locked" position.

  7. Retract it back to the "unlocked" position.

  8. If your lock is paired to the Schlage Home app or any other 3rd party app logout from the app and then log back in; the lock's data is stored in the cloud and will not be lost.

Factory Default Reset

  •

    • If a soft reset does not resolve the issue, proceed with a factory default reset to restore original settings.
