What Zero products to I use to improve acoustic (STC) ratings?

In many homes and buildings, there is a need for sound control solutions.

Examples are hospital rooms, therapy offices and sound studios to name just a few.

There are numerous variables to consider in sound control applications.   Click HERE for the Zero catalog which describes sound control options.

While the list below is not comprehensive,  these are factors and questions to be considered as part of a sound control solution.

  • Collectively,  the Door, Frame, Hinge and Floor conditions will determine the suite of sealing options which can be used.

  • Is the door STC rated?  This is important.  Standard doors do not have a rating; there will be a limit to the sound rating achieved in this case.

  • Even for non-rated doors, a seal such as Zero 475 or 770 on head and jamb,  and automatic door bottom, will achieve reasonable results.

  • Case frames will offer the most options for installing sealing hardware.

  • Consider all hardware around the door including closers, stops, coordinators etc. . These may impact the seals which can be mounted in the same location.

  • Consider clear width issues if seals used on non-cased openings.  The width of the seal mounted to stop can be an issue. 770 works appropriately with a case frame.  870 will be a better stop-mounted option.  Consider all applicable ADA  needs for the opening.

  • Seals such as 188 PSA can fill voids around the door that are not covered by other seals.

  • If a threshold is not used  (example - not mounting over decorative carpeting),  then sound rating will be  lost. To add a seal under the door, a cam lift hinge may be considered to avoid dragging the seal.

  • Offset pivots/hinges or center hung doors  will impact the seals which can be used due to interference during door swing. In some cases, pile can be added to the top of the door for some improvement.  Consider full motion of the door as seal options are reviewed.

  • Sliding doors can be difficult for STC as well.  Again, pile may be an option to fill some air gap without impacting door motion.

  • For excessive gaps under the door, need to size the automatic door bottom with the properly-sized threshold to ensure a right seal. Must consider ADA to ensure compliant threshold height.
