The first step in troubleshooting a possible Ethernet connection problem and a biometric Hand Reader is to boot the reader. When you boot the reader, does it displays "Seeking Ethernet Adapter" at any time?
1) If NO, then the reader does not recognize the installed Ethernet card.
To confirm this, go to the setup menu (password=2) -> set serial -> you should see 'RS-485/422' instead of an IP address.
Next, you can try a cold boot (factory default) on the reader to see if it will recognize the card. Please remember that a cold boot will reset the reader to factory defaults, so make sure that you backup any data before cold booting the reader.
2) If the reader displays "Seeking Ethernet Adapter", does it display "Not Found" afterwards?
If YES, make sure the patch cable is plugged in properly at both the reader and the dataport/hub/switch;
confirm that the port the reader is plugged into is active on the router;
make sure that port is set to 'auto-detect' or 10Mbps;
verify that port 3001 is open between the reader and the computer that you are trying to communicate to with the reader.
3) If NO, go to the setup menu (password=2) -> set serial and confirm the IP address, default gateway and hostbit setting (8 or less if you are subnetting your class C). Please refer to the attached "Hostbit-SubnetMask_table" below for specific hostbit settings.
Next, ping the reader, preferably from a computer on the same subnet as the reader.
If you still cannot ping the reader, try another device on that same port and see if you can ping that device; also check/replace the patch cable. If you can ping another device on that same port, the Ethernet card on the reader may be bad and need to be replaced.
Also plug in ethernet line prior to booting up the reader.
