What kind of door prep is acceptable for fire door modification in the field?

The following job site preparations are acceptable for onsite modification of a fire door assembly:

  • Holes for surface-applied hardware, fasteners, labeled viewers, function holes for mortise locks
  • Round holes no larger than 1" diameter (except cylinder holes while may be any size)
  • Drilling is permissible, however cutting or notching the door is not.  
  • If material is removed, then the holes must be filled with steel fasteners or the same material as the door or frame.  

Modifications beyond these limits require approval from the door/frame manufacturer.
