What is the maximum glass light size available on a 20 minute sidelight frame?

On fire rated transom and/or sidelight frames and fire rated window frames, Steelcraft labeling procedures only control the O/A width and/or height of the frames based on wall condition. The amount of allowable or exposed glass is determined by type of glass being used and will vary depending on the hourly rating required. All glass being used in a fire rated opening must be an approved listed glazing material.

For Listed 1/4" Wire Glass the maximum sizes are:

  • 45 minute frames: 1296 square inches with the width and/or height of exposed glass not to exceed 54".
  • 20 minute frames: 5268 square inches with the width and or height of exposed glass not to exceed 109 3/4".
  • Wire glass may not be used in 60 or 90 minute rated frames.

For other listed glazing types the maximum allowable glass sizes are based on hourly rating required (20, 45, 60 or 90 minutes) and determined by the actual glass manufacturers tested approvals. A list of some of the approved glass types are:

  • FireLite, Firelite Plus, Pyrostop, Pyroguard Clear, Wirelite and Swissflam. Refer to the manufacturers websites for the latest information and approved sizes.

All approved listed glazing material must be installed in accordance with the glazing manufacturers requirements.
