What is the function of the tamper feature on the new wall mounted Schlage card readers?

There is an optical sensor (tamper socket) near the connector. There is a blocking stub (tamper arm) on the backplate. When the reader & backplate are installed, the optical sensor is blocked. When the card reader is pulled away from the backplate, the optical sensor detects that the card reader has been removed and the tamper line is activated.

It is not necessary to use the optical tamper for the card reader to function properly but your Control Panel will lose a capability to detect the removal of your card reader from its wall.  If the Tamper is activated (enabled) then the reader will output an active low on its output (gray) wire (available as Dry Contact Output as needed) that the control panel can read.
