What is the difference between legacy Primus, Primus RP and Primus XP?
Legacy Primus refers to the original Primus cylinders and keys that are no longer under patent protection. Primus XP carries patent protection to 2024 and Primus RP, released in August 2021, extends patent protection on specific keyways to 2029. With the release of Primus RP, Schlage recommendations for the application of XP is changed to both support and improve longevity of patent coverage. Here are the key highlights:
Patent protection ensures the key form cannot be reproduced for sale by another manufacturer and assures the end user that their Primus RP and XP keys and cylinders are tightly controlled by the OEM to eliminate unwanted duplication
Primus XP can be applied to any Everest, Everest 29 or Classic Obverse keyway but it is specifically recommended for the Everest 29 keyway families which carry their own patent protection and extends to Primus use in those keyway families (EV 29 R, S, or T)
Primus RP uses a subtle and ingenious modification to XP cylinders and keys to enable a patent extension of 5 years (to 2029) for the application of Primus in the Obverse keyways
You can upgrade an older, out-of-patent key system to Primus levels of security by introducing Primus RP or XP cylinders on critical points of entry and secured areas
Older Schlage Primus systems will continue to be supported.
