What is the difference between a “tubular” latch and a standard “cylindrical” latch?

Even though the door latch looks similar between a cylindrical and a tubular latch, the retraction mechanism is different:

  1. Cylindrical latches use a spring-hub mechanism that installs in the center of the door for interfacing with the latch.  The door lever spins the spring hub, which in turn, retracts the latch, usually via a dove-tail type engagement.

  2. Tubular latches instead rely on external mechanisms to retract the latch.  In the case of the XE360, a simple square spindle post is inserted through the rear of the latch.
This spindle post is then connected at either end to the XE’s lever spring hubs.  These spring hubs on the lever mounts are what twist the spindle, retracting the latch.
