What is the base material of the knob under the finish?

Schlages locks are a metal blend, with a lacquer based finish and a topcoat to protect the color.

Most of our locks have small amounts lead in them which is why we post the Prop65 warning on our boxes.

Brass and nickel have small amounts of compounds on the list.  All brass (unless specifically stated) contains small amounts of lead and always has. Some of our products have components made of brass with a clear coat covering.
