What is Schlage combinating rule 15?

Schlage Combinating Rule 15 is a name given to the set of measurements that govern how most Schlage keys are cut and most Schlage cylinders are pinned.  It is called Combinating Rule 15 because a single increment or step has a depth .015".

The basics of Combinating Rule 15 are:

  • Two-step progression (must have a difference of two between possible key cut depths in a given chamber)
  • The height of a single step .015" (since Two-step progression is utilized, there is always a minimum of .030" between two possible key cuts in a given position.
  • The angle of the key cutting blade is 100 degrees
  • There is .1562" from center of one cut to the center of its adjacent cut.
