What finishes should be used on exit devices near the ocean or in saltwater environments?
Von Duprin Exit Devices (33A/35A, 98/99, etc) are handled on a case by case basis regarding their ability to handle salt and chemical environments.
Our powder coated finishes US28 (Anodized Aluminum) and 313AN (Anodized Duranotic – Dark Bronze) are superior to our chrome plated finishes such as US26D (Chromium – Dull) and US10 (Satin Bronze, Clear Coated) as well as others when installed in a salt or corrosive environment.
Additionally, the US28 and 313AN finishes are sprayed electro statically, wrapping all around the parts, providing a much greater ability to withstand the salt and chemical environments under their 3 year mechanical warranty and beyond.
The electromechanical exit devices (EL, QEL) have the same corrosion resistance for their mechanical parts. The electrical components such as the RX switch are weather resistant, not weather proof.
The Von Duprin 98 Series Exit Device is available in a 304 grade stainless steel alloy. The 304 stainless steel alloy is corrosion resistant not corrosion-proof; thus, in highly corrosive applications the exit device may rust over time (e.g. center case covers, inside the end caps areas, etc.).
