What finishes should be used on exit devices that are near the ocean or in saltwater environments?

Von Duprin Exit Devices (33A/35A, 98/99, etc) are handled on a case by case basis regarding their ability to handle salt and chemical environments and there is no guarantee that the finish will last in harsh environments.

  • Our powder coated finishes US28 (Aluminum parts are anodized, non-aluminum parts are powder coated to look similar to the aluminum parts) and 313 (Duranotic – Dark Bronze, fully powder coated) and 315 (Flat Black, fully powder coated) tend to withstand harsh environments relatively well.
  • The Von Duprin 98 Series Exit Device is available in a 630/US32D finish.  Some parts of that device are made of 304 stainless steel while other parts are made of aluminum tinted and anodized to look similar to the stainless steel parts.  The 304 stainless steel alloy is corrosion resistant not corrosion-proof and will eventually show signs of corrosion.  Regular cleaning with a stainless steel cleaner may help maintain the finish.
  • The internal components of the devices have a corrosion resistant coating.  Regular inspections and lubrication with a synthetic grease (1 oz tube available as part 091091.
For Outdoor applications the Outdoor Defense feature is available on some models (more to come).
