What causes corrosion on ibutton ports and do I prevent it ?
Corrosion on ibutton ports is the result of a "salty" or "electrolyte-rich" rain (ex. acid rain) in conjunction with the electrical potential across the ibutton ports, which occurs by design. This combination produces a reaction in which small quantities of the metal dissolve into the water and appear as green deposits. No functional problem has been observed as a result of this anomaly. If product may be exposed to this type of environment, the ports can be treated by washing the ports with distilled water and a a soft bristle non metallic brush. Follow up by drying the area, and applying a light coat of dielectric grease to the port. Dielectric grease can be acquired at any automotive store.
