What causes a 1460 hold open arm to lock back into hold open before door gets to fully closed position

This condition can be caused by two ways:

  1. If the 1460 is templated for 180°, and the hold open is set for less than 110°. Example door templated for 180° and hold open set to 90°.  Solution: Reinstall closer to proper template for desired hold open angle
  2. If the arm is preloaded too far.  Solution:  Reinstall arm with proper preload.

What happens in these cases is that the arm position is the same when the door reaches the last few degrees prior to closing fully as it was at the Hold Open point.
