What are the installation tolerances for hollow metal frames?

Industry standards for hollow metal frames installation tolerances have been developed by both the SDI (Steel Door Institute) and HMMA (Hollow Metal Manufacturers). Both standards are based on the input and consensus of all member companies.

  1. It is the installing contractor's responsibility to install frames in accordance with either standard.
  2. If frames are installed not in compliance with either standard one or more of the following issues may occur:
    • Door binding
    • Door hitting the strike jamb or head
    • Locking hardware binding or not latching
    • Hinge bind
    • Door not closing

SDI (Steel Door Institute) installation tolerances are found in SDI/ANSI A250.11-2001.  Here is SDI website.

HMMA (Hollow Metal Manufacturers) installation tolerances are found in NAAMM HMMA 840-07.  Here is HMMA website.
