Verify handing and setup of Schlage smart deadbolts

The following applies to the Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt (BE468/BE469) and Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt (BE479).

Issue: The setup (handing process) tries to complete but fails. The motor operates and moves the bolt, but the keypad displays a red X. The bolt keeps trying to go in and out, or stops partway, preventing the lock from operating as expected.

Environment:

  • New installation
  • The door is open. If it works when the door is open but not when it is closed, see this article about door alignment (opens in a new window).
  • You can hear the motor running and the bolt moves, though it may not stop in the proper place. 
  • If the bolt does not move at all, see this article (opens in a new window).

Cause: This is caused by one of the following reasons:

  • One or more batteries are dead or installed upside down.
  • The driver bar and cam are not properly aligned.
  • The timing of the gears and driver bar are not properly aligned.

Resolution:

  1. Check that all batteries are oriented correctly. You may wish to try a new set of batteries as well.  Wondering which batteries to use? Click here.
  2. Perform a Factory Default Reset.
  3. Try to complete setup (handing process) by pressing the Schlage button and entering a default user code.
    1. A green check means the issue is solved.
    2. If you see a red X, continue to step 4.
  4. Verify that the notch in the cam aligns with the tab on the driver bar (refer to pictures below). The driver bar notch should be on the top right. 
  5. Is the cam on the thumb turn upside down?
    1. Yes. Turn the cam to the proper orientation. It is okay to force against the gears.   Perform a Factory Default Reset and try handing the lock again (step 3).
    2. No. Contact Customer Service and we will assist with the resolution.
