There is corrosion on the ibutton ports on our lock. What causes it and how do we prevent this?
Corrosion on ibutton ports is the result of a "salty" or "electrolyte-rich" rain (ex. acid rain) in conjunction with the electrical potential across the ibutton ports.. This combination produces a reaction in which small quantities of the metal may dissolve in the water and appear as a green deposit. No functional issues have been discovered. If the locks have been subjected to such an environment, the ports can be treated by washing with distilled water and a small brush. Follow up by completely drying the area, and applying a light coat of dielectric grease to the port contact surfaces. The dielectric grease can found in most automotive parts store.
