A more intelligent form of proximity card. Proximity readers can only read from a proximity card and not write to it, while smart card technology allows the reader to read/write to the card. In addition, transmission between a proximity card and proximity reader is not encrypted and can be easily intercepted, deciphered, and then ‘feigned’ to gain entry. Smart card technology uses a key structure between the reader and card, and requires a ‘handshake’ to establish authenticity before transmitting data in either direction. Smart cards also have a larger memory than proximity cards and can perform computing functions. Smart cards operate at 13.56MHz.
