Should doors be reinforced for continuous hinges?

Hinge manufacturers do not require or recommend that doors should be reinforced for continuous hinges. Steelcraft does not reinforce for continuous hinges unless it is specified on the customers' PO.

When reinforcements for continuous hinges are specified they are welded to the inside of the door panel and located on either inside of the hinge edge or on the inside of the door face. Only the internal reinforcements for mortised (edge mounted) continuous hinges are visible

  1. Mortised continuous hinges (Mounted on door edge):
    • Standard 14 gage reinforcement:
      • Located on the inside of the hinge edge
      • 1/8" from top/bottom of door
      • The reinforcement edge is visible at the top and bottom edges of the door and is located between the end channels and the inside surface of the door edge.
    • The optional 10 gage reinforcement when requested or for use with certain manufacture adjustable design hinges:
      • Located on the inside of the hinge edge
      • held at 1" from top/bottom of door
      • The reinforcement is not visible.
  2. Surface mounted continuous hinges (Mounted on the door face):
    • Standard 16 gauge
      • Located on the inside of the door panel at the hinge edge
      • 1" from top/bottom of door
      • The reinforcement is not visible.
