Schlage Enrollment Reader stops reading cards after a few tries.

Cause:
Insufficient output current from the USB port causes enrollment reader to freeze therefore not detecting credential in RF field.

Background Description:
On the latest laptop or desktop computers, there will be one or more USB Host Controllers present.  To verify, access the computer’s Device Manager and Universal Serial Bus Controllers.  Locate any listing that contains “Host Controller” or similar.  A USB Host Controller can control numerous USB ports in which a device (i.e. keyboard, mouse, memory sticks, audio devices, etc.) can be connected to.  One USB port will output 5V with a current of 500mA.  As more USB ports are used by other devices, the controller will attempt to equally divide the 500mA between each device with the minimum at 100mA.  Regardless of the current levels, the output voltage will remain at 5V at each port.

The SUSB89 enrollment reader requires a minimum of 160mA to a maximum of 200mA to function.  Should there be multiple devices connected to the computer, the amount of current will be limited and in most cases, less than the required amount therefore causing the enrollment reader to not function properly.

Resolution:
With the current product, there are two options available.

Option 1:
Disconnect any unused or rarely used USB devices from the computer and limit the amount of devices to 2 maximum whenever the enrollment reader is being used.  This will allow for adequate current to be provided to the enrollment reader.

Option 2:
Obtain an USB hub with its own power supply.  This will assure that every USB port on that hub will have adequate current.  Minimum requirements are as follows:

- Self-powered using its own power supply
- Operating Systems:  Windows 7, Vista, XP
- Compliant Standards:  USB 2.0 with backwards compatibility to USB 1.1
- Output Current:  0.5A per port

Suggested powered USB hubs currently used are the Dynex DX-H420P, D-Link DUB-H4-4, and Gear Head UH5500ESP.  All are 4-port USB 2.0 hubs that include their own power adapter.
