How to use a Virtual Key

With Schlage’s app-enabled products like the Schlage Encode (BE489), Schlage Encode Plus (BE499), Schlage Encode Lever (FE789) and Schlage Sense (BE479) Smart Locks homeowners can share a virtual key with guest or admin privileges.

Guest Virtual Keys grants holders the ability to lock and unlock the  Smart Lock, but only when they are within Bluetooth range.
Admins can remotely control the Smart Lock, just like the owner, and have access to user codes and settings.


If you have received a link for a virtual key:

  • Visit the URL from your smart phone to activate the virtual key.
  • The virtual key URL will expire after 24 hours or as soon as the link has been activated.
  • Once you activate the virtual key, the Schlage app will give you privileges to control the lock. If you don’t have the Schlage app or a Schlage account, tap on the virtual key link and follow the steps provided.
TIP: For guests who would rather not download an app, creating an access code is another way to share access. Access code users can lock and unlock the door using the Smart Lock’s touchscreen.
