How to Remove a Stuck Deadbolt?

If your deadbolt lock is stuck in the locked position but needs to be removed from your door, follow these steps to resolve the issue:

What You'll Need:

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver

1. Remove the Interior and Exterior Portions of Your Deadbolt Lock

  • Begin by removing both the interior and exterior components of the deadbolt lock. If you need assistance with this process, please review the Installation Page for instructions.

2. Unlock the Deadbolt Manually

  • With only the deadbolt mechanism remaining in the door, insert a flat-head screwdriver into the opening on the deadbolt.
  • Turn the screwdriver toward the door hinges to manually unlock the bolt.

If this does not unlock the bolt, you will need to implode the deadbolt.

To Implode the Deadbolt

  1. Locate the flat metal piece at the bottom of the deadbolt latch.
  2. Insert the flat-head screw driver into the opening between the metal piece and the bolt.
  3. Use the screwdriver to pry this piece from the deadbolt.
  4. Insert the screwdriver through the silver/gold/black piece.
  5. Pull down until the piece slides out.
  6. Insert the screw driver into the opening above and rotate towards the hinges.
  7. This should allow you to freely retract the bolt, unlocking the door and enabling you to remove it.
