How to Remove a Deadlatch When Door is Closed and Can't Open

Removing a Stuck Keyed Entry Deadlatch

If a keyed entry deadlatch is stuck in the door, you can still remove the bolt. Follow these steps to resolve the issue:

Step 1: Uninstall the Interior Lever

  1. Remove the Lever:
    • Unscrew each screw on either side of the knob or lever.
    • Pull the knob or lever off the door.

Step 2: Attempt to Release the Latch

  • Pinch the top and bottom of the latch.
  • Pull in the direction of the hinges to try to release the door.

Step 3: Explode the Deadlatch (If Necessary)

If the latch does not move after attempting the previous steps, you may need to "explode" the deadlatch. Please refer to the detailed instructions below for this procedure.
Instructional guide titled "Explode a Latch: How to Remove Deadlatch When Door is Closed & Can’t Open [Deadlatch Only]." The guide includes three images and step-by-step instructions: First Image: Shows a close-up of a latch with a red circle highlighting a tab at the end. A pair of pliers is positioned near the tab. The text instructs to locate the tab at the end of the latch, which can be seen from both the interior and exterior of the door. Second Image: Displays a close-up of the latch with a "figure 8" hole and an arrow pointing to it. The text advises gripping the latch through these holes and pulling to separate the latch halves. Third Image: Shows the latch with two halves separated, with a red circle highlighting the "legs" sticking out. The text explains that once the latch halves come apart, the back half will fall out, leaving two legs that can be pulled away from the door jamb to retract the latch. The guide concludes with a "Last Resort Tip" suggesting removing door hinges and the door itself if the latch is jammed inside, to facilitate removing a broken latch.

If this does not resolve the issue, it is advisable to contact a locksmith to remove the latch.
