How to Change the Batteries in a Schlage Encode Lock

Schlage Encode locks are powered by AA alkaline batteries, and replacing them is a simple process that ensures your lock functions reliably. Whether you own the BE489WB, BE499WB, or FE789WB model, the battery replacement steps are the same.

  1. Remove the battery cover from the lock.
  2. Gently slide the battery holder upwards to remove it from the lock.
  3. Turn the battery holder around and install four (4) new AA alkaline batteries.
  4. Turn the battery holder back around to face the door.
  5. Reinsert the battery holder.
  6. Securely place the battery cover back onto the lock.

Note: Lithium or rechargeable batteries are not recommended because of their reduced capacity.
