How do I set up my Android for file transfer by default so that I can use it for Schlage Express?

While using the SUS-A Android device HHD replacement solution, it is necessary to change the USB settings to default to “File Transfer”, instead of the out-of-the-box standard “USB charging ONLY” setting.

The following steps are specific to the Moto G7.  You can apply these settings to any Android phone, the wording might be different on other Android devices.

REASON:  The Android Operating System protects their users from untrusted sources by not allowing file transfers via the USB connection.  This USB protection feature prevents anyone from placing files into the phone’s internal memory.  However, the Schlage Express Access System software requires the Door programming files (XXXXXXXX.D0X), Audits (XXXXXXXX.A0X), Capindex.ndx and Uplink.log files to be manually transferred via USB to the host computer for normal operation.

Here is the process used on a Moto G7 phone using Android OS 10 to change the default USB setting to allow “File Transfers” from your trusted source (Schlage Express)

First – the user must enable the “Developer” mode on your Android device:

  • Go to “Settings”
  • Select “About Phone”
  • Select “Build Number”
  • Tap on the “Build Number” seven (7) times
    • You will/may be required to reenter the device passcode again
  • You will see a popup message “You are now a Developer”, or possibly another popup message stating “You are already a Developer”

Then – set the USB setting default to “File Transfer”:

  • Go to “Settings”
  • Select “System”
  • Select “Advanced”
  • Select “Developer Options”
  • Scroll way down to find and Select “Default USB configuration”
  • Select the “File Transfer” option
    • Note: this setting will still allow USB battery charging when selected
  • Use the Back Arrow to exit the previous screen
    • See the “Developer options” slider is ON
    • Slide this back to OFF to exit Developer Mode

Now each time you connect the mobile device to your computer, it will have “File Transfers” enabled and allow for Schlage Express files transferring using “File Explorer” when necessary.
