How do I install the (FC 21) privacy pin?

The privacy pin may be installed either above or below the knob/lever. See this topic for more information.

If you have already installed the privacy pin, but it will not stay in the hole, follow these instructions carefully; pay special attention to steps 2 and 3.

Before beginning, remove the knob or lever.
  1. Install the pin cap.

  2. Confirm the position of the slot in the chassis. Look inside the hole in the trim. The slot must be horizontal.

If you cannot see a slot through the hole at all, you may have installed the chassis with the hole on top. See this article for more information.

The lock ships with this slot in the correct position, but it may have changed if you did not get the pin fully engaged before turning (step 3).
If the slot is not in the horizontal position, adjust it using the privacy pin.

  3. Install the privacy pin. PUSH HARD! The pin must CLICK into place.

  4. Rotate the pin to the right until it stops, about 1/4 turn.

If the pin does not stay in the hole, it is not fully clicked into place, and you need to push harder. Make sure the slot is in the correct position before trying to click it into place again.

  5. Remove the pin cap.

Make sure to keep the pin cap in case you want to remove the privacy pin in the future.

  6. Push the knob or lever onto the spindle.

    Then tighten the set screw.

  7. Test the privacy function. TEST WITH DOOR OPEN TO AVOID BEING LOCKED IN OR OUT.
Push the pin in until it clicks. The lock should now be locked. Try to rotate the exterior knob/lever; it should not move.

  8. Use the emergency unlock tool to unlock the lock. Push the tool into the hole in the trim until you hear a click. The lock should now be unlocked.

If the privacy pin did not stay in the lock, it was not fully engaged. Go back to step 2, and push harder during step 3, until the pin clicks into place. You should hear a loud clicking sound.
If you need to remove the privacy pin, simply rotate the pin to the left until it stops (about 1/4 turn), and then pull the pin out. You may need to use pliers, but be sure to reinstall the pin cap first, or use some other material to protect the finish.
