Emergency Secure Lockdown (ESL) Frequently Asked Questions

Please reference the data sheet and instruction sheet for most technical questions regarding the  Von Duprin Emergency Secure Lockdown (ESL) option.

Following are additional questions and answers for  ESL :

  1. How does ESL work for double doors?
Each door will need an ESL kit.  In the event of an emergency,  both doors must be locked down to secure the opening.

  2. From the ingress side, will a user know the door is in lockdown mode?
No.  The access reader will acknowledge a credential normally. However, the QEL device will not unlock.

  3. Will I need to change my power transfer to retrofit an opening?
ESL requires 4 wires from frame to door. You may need to change your transfer if you have less than 4 wires.

  4. Is a Von Duprin power supply required?
Yes. See instructions.  Allegion has not tested, and does not support, using ESL with power supplies from other manufacturers.

  5. The instructions show the 4R option being used.  Can I use 4RL?
Yes, set the DIP switches to zero to remove all time delay.  Set Zone 2 relay for dry contacts.

  6. Does ESL have a CON option?
    No.

  7. Is ESL handed?
ESL is not ordered handed.  However, it does need to be oriented properly in the field.  The ESL tumbler with printing can be easily changed in the field.

  8. Can ESL be ordered pre-installed in an exit device?
No, not at the time of this writing  (April 2021).   ESL is a kit that is ordered as a separate line item and field-installed.

  9. Is an integrator required to make ESL operate?
No.  ESL will lockdown a door when wired as shown,  with no integrator needed.
However,  ESL does have contacts available to wire to a panel to indicate lockdown status of door. If these contacts are intended to provide additional feedback or actions,  then an integrator would be needed to program any changes based on the signal.

  10. Can ESL be used to control anything other than a QEL device?
No.   As of April 2021,  ESL has has not been tested or approved with Von Duprin EL devices or Falcon latch retraction devices.
