Apple home keys can be used in the same way as Apple Pay – by double tapping the lock button on iPhone and authenticating with a passcode or FaceID, or you can enable Express Mode so you don’t need to unlock your iPhone or Apple Watch to open the lock. Simply hold the device to the lock’s keypad target to use.
When setting up your lock in the Apple Home app, you will be presented with the ability to enable Express Mode.
Express Mode can be enabled or disable in the Wallet App settings for the home key at any time. You can even manage it by device. (i.e. You can enable Express Mode on your Watch home key but elect to not enable Express Mode on your iPhone, if you so desired.)
