Rod Guards and Latch Guards are made of stainless steel and can be used to provide additional protection of Surface Vertical Rods.
The Bottom Rod and/or Bottom Latch are sometimes given this extra protection since they are typically more likely to be struck by carts or other items going through the opening.
Latch Guards are handed so that the slope of the Guard is facing the direction of traffic when the door is pushed open since that is the most likely time something might hit the latch.
Extended Latch Guards extends the sloped portion of the Guard further across the width of the door to more gently direct carts, wheelchairs, walkers, etc. away from the face of the door.
A Latch Guard of the opposite handing of the exit device could be used to cover the Top Latch of many Surface Vertical Rod Exit Devices (not on the 8827-F Fire Rated Top Latch) if desired, though this is not common.
