Can electric strikes be used with vertical rod exit devices?

Electric latch retraction devices or electrified trim are better options than electric strikes when using vertical rod exit devices. Electric strikes often are not a good choice for use with vertical rod devices for several reasons including the following:

  • Electric strikes require the vertical rod devices to have Pullman style latches. Pullman latches have no deadlatching, so it is easier to rock or pop the door open from the secure side of the opening.
  • Fire rated vertical rod devices may never use Pullman style latches. They require latches with deadlatching.
  • Most vertical rod exit devices have to be LBR (less bottom rod and latch) when using electric strikes.  Single point latching at only the top of the door also compromises security.
  • The backset of the vertical rod device and latch on the door needs to be coordinated with the faceplate length of the electric strike that is being used.  For narrow stile applications, there may not be adequate space to mount electric strikes.
