Can a Schlage lock be installed sideways in order to have a top leaf latch into the bottom leaf of a Dutch door?

Schlage locks are not a recommended solution for latching a top leaf directly into a bottom leaf of a Dutch door.

For Fire Rated Dutch Doors

  • Schlage locks are not tested for installation 90 degrees off of ‘normal’.
  • Any lock installed in such a way would be voiding the UL label and could not be used on a fire rated door.

For Non-Fire Rated Dutch Doors

  • Schlage locks are not tested for installation 90 degrees off of ‘normal’ and doing so would void the warranty.
  • Schlage L series mortise locks should only be installed upright as gravity is required for correct lock operation.
  • Schlage cylindrical locks, tubular locks, and deadlocks might function mechanically to secure the top leaf to the bottom leaf, however this application has not been tested and is not recommended.
