Can a door be field prepared for a raceway?

Steelcraft recommends that raceways are factory installed. When jobsite circumstances dictate the need for field preparation:

  1. L-Series doors with honeycomb cores can be field prepared for a raceway by a training Steelcraft distributor. Guidelines for this field prep are as follows:
    1. The distributor can either convert/prep the center hinge (or the hinge closest to the horizontal centerline of the lock) for the electric contact hinge, or prep for an EPT.
    2. Cut a 3/8" steel rod to a length approximately equal to door with + 4". Grind one end of the rod to a point.
    3. Place the pointed end of the rod in the access hole of the electric contact hinge, pointed at the electric lock/strike prep
    4. Force the rod through the door core.
    5. use the rod to thread the contact wire through the door.
  2. Insulated cores (polystyrene, polyurethane, temperature rise) are not recommended to be field prepared for raceways.
  3. B-Series (steel stiffened cores) must be prepared in the factory
  4. Doors with glass lights (A14-Series doors or any door with glass preparation in the pathway of the raceway):
    1. Two (2) holes could be drill through the end channel, at the hinge and at the lock/strike edge
    2. Drop wire down to the appropriate location and allow the wire to rest in the end channel.
    3. Recommend inserting rubber/plastic grommets into the holes to protect wire from chaffing.
    4. Recommend installing a snap-in top cap to protect the wire.
