Can a 996L trim be used with an old 9947 device?

That would depend on the shape of the connector on the top end of the bottom rod.

When the device was first launched and the 992L/L-BE lever trims were the only lever trims made for that device, the connector on the top of the bottom rod had a single 90 degree bend to look like an upside down capitol L.

When the 994L/L-BE, and later the 996L/L-BE, series lever trims with the Breakaway Lever feature were being developed, the large springs for that feature interfered with the bottom rod connector.
To resolve that issue, the split portion of the connector was redesigned to shift away from the trim, thus the long leg of the L has an offset shift  in the middle of it.
This offset shift allows the rod to sit behind the large springs on a 996L/L-BE trim.

If replacing an old trim with a new 996L/L-BE trim, you will need a new bottom rod (050575) if the existing rod does not have the offset shift shown on page 6 of the present 98/9947 Part Manual.
