Ives Aluminum Geared custom hinge lengths and non standard door heights.

Resolution:

Minimum

XY hinges have a minimum cut down length of 69” either cut by the factory or by the installer.  (Shorter hinges than 69" may be possible through engineering specials.)

HD hinges have a minimum cut down length of 9” either cut by the factory or by the installer.

 

Maximum

Both XY & HD hinges have a maximum length of 119”/120” respectively.  there is no engineering special longer length for them.  

 

Oversize doors

Can an XY or HD hinge be used on a door taller than 119”/120”?  

* It is not recommended.  I would look strange, and since it is larger than our maximum recommended height it is not a tested application and would not be suitable for rated or other rated applications.  It might not be covered by warranty if it fails.  If a hinge that is too short for the door is used, the door weight and reinforcement/rivet nut requirements would still be suggested.

 

Please also note - if cutting off more than 13.50" on an HD hinge:

If more than 13.5” is cut from bottom of hinge, a set screw bearing will be cut off. This set screw bearing is required for proper operation. In this case remove the set screw bearing from the cut off section by loosening set screw and sliding back channel. Loosen set screw(s) on hinge, slide back channel, and replace a non set screw bearing with a set screw bearing. Slide channel back into place and tighten all set screws.

A. If more than 13.5" is cut from the bottom of the hinge, a set screw bearing will be cut off.  This set screw bearing is required for proper operation.

B. In this case remove the set screw bearing from the cut off section by loosening set screw and sliding back channel.  

C. Loosen set screw(s) on hinge, slide back channel, and replace a non set screw bearing with a set screw bearing.

D. Slide channel back into place and tighten all set screws.

83”, 85”, and 95” hinges require 2 set screw bearings. 120” hinges require 3 set screw bearings. Serviceable panel hinges require 2 set screw bearings per section.
