What is the standard downsizing for a door leaf when using continuous hinges?

Doors require special downsizing for continuous hinges. The amount of downsizing depends on the hinge specified (manufacturer and type) and the hinge application (Full Mortise versus Full Surface versus Half Surface)

Continuous hinges use the same terms as butt hinges:

  • Full mortise
  • Full Surface
  • Half surface

Continuous Hinges are attached to the surface of both door and frame (edge, rabbet or faces). It is common that the frame will remain as a standard width and the door will be downsized. The manufacture of the hinge will control the value of the downsizing for proper fit and function.  See Allegion templates here for hinges.
