What is a mullion?

A Mullion is a vertical frame member set in a double door opening which will allow both door leaves to be active.

  • Mullions can be fixed or removable.
  • Mullions may also occur between a door and a sidelight or as a vertical and/ or horizontal member separating lights or panels

Hardware Mullion: Supplied by the Hardware Manufacturer and are always removable:

  • Installed during door hardware installation
  • Always removable
  • Most commonly used in double door Rim Exit Device applications.
  • Keyed Removable Steel Mullions makes removal faster and easier by a single operation of the mortise cylinder.

Hollow Metal Mullion: Supplied by the Hollow Metal Manufacturer and allow for the use of all locks including cylindrical locks, mortise locks and mortise lock exit devices.

  • These mullions are fabricated as closed sections with a profile to match the hollow metal frame and located between the each leaf or double doors.
  • Can be either fixed or removable
    • Fixed Mullions - Welded to the frame head. During installation, anchored to the floor at the base of the mullion.
    • Removable Mullions - Mechanically attached (during installation) to the underside of the frame head and to the floor.
      • Specified and used in applications requiring periodic movement of large furniture and equipment.
  • Hollow Metal mullion may also occur between a door and a sidelight or as a vertical and/or horizontal member separating lights or panels.
  • Steelcraft "standard depth " mullions include a #16 gage internal reinforcement. "Special depth" mullions do not include this internal reinforcement.
