157XY Aluminum Full Surface Continuous Hinge Improvements
Ives is announcing a series of updates and improvements that will be
taking effect on May 1, 2014 to the 157XY full surface aluminum geared
continuous hinge. Since its release last June, the 157XY is enjoying increased
popularity due to its unique adjustment capability and stylish cover system, as
well as the innovative and patented center loaded bearing design. To enhance
the performance of the hinge further, three new changes will be taking effect.
New Rounded Gear Design Profile – Competitive geared hinges typically use an
involute gear tooth design which given the unique application of a continuous
geared hinge actually increases the contact stresses that occur as the hinge
operates. However, given the non-controlled centers of a continuous geared
hinge, the new 157XY will take advantage of a rounded gear tooth design which
allows smoother intermeshing and less wear on the gear teeth. This makes for a
longer wearing and easier operating hinge.
Bearing Material Upgrade – When the product was released under the old R2
design in 2013, it used bearings manufactured in Delrin. The bearing material is
now upgraded to the same proprietary Nylon product that is used in all our
other continuous hinges models. Again, this offers significant service life
improvements.
Hinge Lubrication – Currently, the 157XY has a Teflon based lubricant
cured onto the gear portion of the hinge. However, this lubricant soon breaks
down and might possibly trap debris caused by wear. Without continual lubrication
process (imagine your car engine), the impact of this lubrication process is
literally un-measurable over the life of the hinge. Thus, with the release of
the new gear tooth design and the new bearing material, the 157XY will no
longer receive this lubrication process. Please keep in mind that none of the
other Ives continuous hinges currently need lubrication and all come with a
lifetime warranty.
